EEW LEAD TIME: SASMEX defines “lead time” as the interval between the moment the population hears the official seismic alert and the moment strong seismic waves reach the alerted location. The system can provide approximately 20 to 120 seconds of lead time, depending on the distance between the earthquake epicenter and the user's location. For example, an earthquake originating off the Michoacán coast could provide over 100 seconds of lead time for Mexico City, locations while closer to the epicenter will have shorter lead times.
